Born in June 4 1902, Harry Beck was an English technical draughtsman who recreated the London Underground Tube map in 1931. He recreated the map to make the Underground easier to navigate.
Harry Beck's Map however was rejected by the Office of London Transport. His map stayed rejected for a while until the Office changed their minds and published a pocket version of this Map. The Map instantly became popular across London due to the simplicity and easy to understand nature of its design. The map soon sold around 700,000 copies.
Old London Underground Map
The design of the old London Underground map was messy and unclear, Harry Beck even described the Map as a "messy bowl of spaghetti.'
The old London Underground Map was switched as the New map of Harry Beck's map became popular. This resulted in a problem.
After the new map replaced the old, The Office of London began updating the Map Harry Beck has made without his permission. Feeling betrayed, Harry Beck tried to threaten the Office of London with legal action in order to regain control of the map.
Unfortunately Harry Beck was never able to regain control.
In 18 September 1974 Harry Beck passed away. But in 1997, London finally Made the updated version of the map separate of to original design to pay respect to Harry Becks death.
