Topology 3D

Updated: Nov 2, 2023

Topology is an range of shape structures such as Faces, edges and vertices.

The three types of Topology are Tri, Quad and N-Gon.

A good topology would focus more on the major feature of the model, this would make the model easier to animate.

A bad Topology is used when an object needs to be stationary. A bad topology tends to be messy and would prove to be a problem when it need to be animated.

Quads tend to be the most flexible, The other topologies are best to be used on flat surfaces as they could result in pinching.

Hard surface modelling is a type of modelling which is used for objects which aren't living. This can be weapons, furniture and materials.

NURBS modelling is used or organic soft surfaces which require a multiple slopes.

Subdivision surface modelling help to keep a lower polygon count in your models. This could be by smoothing out a 3D model.

Two-manifold topology polygons have a mesh. This can be split along multiple edges and could be unfolded so that the mesh is flat to avoid overlapping.

Non manifolds cannot be folded into a float piece.

There are multiple 3D software that are used by many 3D animators and modellers.

Some examples are:

-Blender

-Maya

-Cinema 4D
